Construction of Unit 1 began on July 1, 1957. Unit 1 (VVER-210) was connected to the grid on September 30, 1964, Unit 2 (VVER-365) on December 27, 1969, and Unit 3 (VVER-440) on December 27, 1971. Unit 4 followed on December 28, 1972, and Unit 5, a VVER-1000 prototype, on May 31, 1980. Units 1 and 2 were permanently shut down in 1984 and 1990, and Unit 3 on December 25, 2016. Two newer units of Novovoronezh II were connected to the grid in 2016 and 2019.
