The site was selected in August 1952, and groundbreaking took place on November 18, 1952. Enrichment began in 1954 while construction continued, and the plant was fully online by early 1956. Gaseous diffusion enrichment ended in May 2001. Separately, a Department of Energy gas centrifuge enrichment plant was under construction at the site in the early 1980s and was abandoned in June 1985. The site never hosted an operating nuclear reactor.
