OK folks - might be time to compile a list of interesting websites where we mere mortals can buy our own kit - or the company some new interesting toys!

I'll chuck it in with my forementioned www.gammascout.com ...

KidGruesome

The Gamma-Scout is neat.  I've had one for a couple of months now.  The best thing about it is its 10 year battery, there's literally no off button.

I'll toss in a few links, but I'm sure most of you already have them bookmarked  ;)

https://www.labsafety.com/ (Lab Safety sells a lot of great stuff, including Eberline's Rad-Alert 4, very affordable)

Go for the GammaScout... Affordable $300, and it runs forever!

PWHoppe

OK...I'll bite!

Why do I want to have my own meter ??? Are we anticipating a nuclear attack or do we believe that the ambient background radiation is of concern? The incidence of someone actually coming in contact with "lost" radioactive material is slim to none. So... again why do I want my own meter? :-/
If a chicken and a half can lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many days will it take a grasshopper with a rubber foot to kick a hole in a tin can?

No you don't actually "need" your own meter (at least I hope not), but he/she who has the most toys wins  ;D ;D

mikeland

I've found a few hot things with mine ... as for nuclear attack - forget these ... they'll just overload ...
But when it is Rads/hr - I guess it is how fast you can move. ::)

KidGruesome

There are a lot of people who collect uranium ore, so owning a meter is good for that.  And I'm probably a nerd, but I like taking the Gamma Scout with me on trips, seeing the changes in b/g radiation corresponding to differing altitude and locale.  (The GS measures down to a hundredth of a micro Sv)

If there's a nuclear attack, though, I can always go to a certain community college in my area that has a victoreen CDV.  It's what they use in their chemistry "department"! :D

mikeland

Hmm - yes - some of those little chunks of pitchblende can really pump out a bit - I was quite surprised at how hot some of them can be!

Yep, old raditect will alert you before the "plume" reaches you so you can get the family into their gas masks (don't forget the baby will need help with hers), grab the shotgun and get into the shelter  ;D :o

DainJer

should i start pouring a concrete roof on the swimming pool?

Kid Gruesome... I would love to see any data you have ... for the science club web site I'm building.
I think collecting that info is a great idea!  Not nerdy at all.  (of course I'm a bit of a science nerd... so... well... you might not want to take my opinion on that topic.)  ;)

Rain Man

littlebittime...sloglo doesn't need the Pocket Erector Set.
He just pulls his hernia truss up an extra notch or two.  Sorry for letting the secret out slo...But back to the thread...a good old techi tool was using a bootie for barfing in during SG coverage after a rough night and too many toddies.  That was OK until they started trash sorting....gotta run..my colostomy bag just sprung a leak.

RainMan...thats not funny after hearing a Tech tell me about having to throw many "hidden" bags of "waste".  he found thrown in corners in trash bags in various places in Aux. building over the years....is this a common HP/radTech trick....or am i not supposed to disclose said "tricks-of-the-trade" ?

Rain Man

It wasn't a common practice, but did happen on occasion.
