Been with DOE - just getting involved in outages

Hello everyone,

I've been working for DOE contractors as a technical HP guy since college (over 10 years ago), and I want to get involved in doing an NPP outage this spring.  I've sent resumes to Bartlett & DZ, but I haven't heard anything.  I'm guessing that the outage employment process is different from applying for permanent work, but I don't know what else I should do at this point (or what to expect).  Do I contact the utilities directly, bug Bartlett and DZ until they all know me by name (and not in a good way), or just wait?  Anyone got any advice?

Also -- anyone know of any plants (US or Canadian) that might be looking for an outage HP this spring?

Call them 3 times a week.  Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Unless on Monday they tell you they won't know anything until Friday.

It's the guy that calls the moment they have a need that gets sent to the job site. -- That or the guy that calls every day... send him there so he will quit calling.

It worked for me.  I always asked "When would you like me to call back... or when will you know more?"

Now that they have your current resume call them every time you see a job posted that you might like to have and tell them you want to be submitted for that job. Your active participation is necessary to your success. And when you talk to a recruiter get to know them. They want to fill every job but if they don't know you they will not think of you. So make some calls today!

 It might help to tell them that you are trying to expand you experience base to include Utility outages.  I went from a commercial decon to outages by doing so.  All in all, keep calling.  PM me if you want to talk.  Paule

A couple issues:  First off, just because you have been DOE for 10 years does NOT make you an ansi 3.1 SR HP, depending on what exactly you have been doing and where. Secondly, you will have zero quals in Pads, so wherever you go you will need full OJT/TPE.
Lastly, will be security.. you will need an initial PHQ, which will include MMPI, fingerprints, etc... These are issues working against you.   Good luck.

Know what your asking for and ask the right questions.
Ask to speak to a recruiter.
Find out the outage schedule and durations (and Pay!)

First, I know the Bartlett Brothers from Plymouth Mass. One owns Bartlett Nuclear and the other owns Bartlett Consolidated. I wouldn't work for that company. Just my opinion. I believe your best option is to look at Nuclear utilities. Check Nextera, Entergy etc. The prime thing to keep in mind if you go to work for a contract firm is that they may just be looking for "warm bodies". While it may get you qualified, the job may not last all that long. If you worked for DOE, you most likely would be able to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance easily. I have met HP supervisors, that have few qualifications except the political kind...not the professional kind. I would start entry level and I am certain if you have the knowledge, skills and ability you will advance quickly.Finally, don't let anyone rain on your parade...unless they want your footprints also.

Now is the perfect time to get back into the industry. NRC has begun licensing new plants for construction and TVA is going to be bringing a new plant on line next year. I would check with TVA go directly to a utility, working for contractors there is no guarantee for continued work. A nuclear utility can dump a company on a dime if they don't do the job right. Look for plant owner operator careers.

GLW was right - you definitely do not know what you think you know.  First off one of the "Bartlett Brother's" as you call them no longer owns Bartlett Nuclear - we are now owned by an investment firm, in fact this is the second investment firm that has owned us since Bruce Bartlett sold the company back in '04-'05.  Bruce no longer has any influence as to how we do business as he no longer in the picture and is concentrating on his other ventures such as Excel Scaffolding.  But I will admit that my dad does own Bartlett Consolidated, which has nothing to do with the nuclear power industry.
