Exclusive: Q&A with Pacific Fusion CTO Keith LeChien

Pacific Fusion has secured $900 million in Series A funding to develop a pulser-driven inertial fusion system. The company plans to break ground on a demonstration facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this summer. It aims to achieve net facility gain by 2030 and commercial power production by the mid-2030s.

The company utilizes a modular design intended for factory manufacturing rather than custom, one-off construction. By using common industrial materials and avoiding fissile fuel, the firm seeks to bypass the regulatory and economic hurdles associated with traditional fission reactors. Success depends on scaling production of high-power pulser modules to meet the 2030 timeline.

In October 2024 Pacific Fusion, a fusion development company based in Fremont, CA, previously unknown operating in "stealth mode," rocketed to the forefront of attention in the fusion industry startup scene by scoring $900 million in Series A funding from an "A List" of high-tech investors.

The firm secured more than $900 million in investor commitments. Hemant Taneja of General Catalyst led the round. Alongside General Catalyst, a mix of institutional VCs and individual company builders have participated in the funding round.
