Minnesota will begin a feasibility study on July 1 to evaluate the potential removal of the state's long-standing moratorium on new nuclear power plants. The Department of Commerce is coordinating the assessment, which must address technical, economic, and environmental factors, including waste management and public safety, by early 2027.

The study arrives as the state pursues a carbon-free energy mandate by 2040 amid rising electricity demand from data centers. For the nuclear industry, the outcome could determine whether Minnesota remains a restricted market or opens to new reactor deployments, balancing grid reliability needs against ongoing concerns regarding long-term radioactive waste storage.
