Realta Fusion successfully harvested electricity directly from its WHAM demonstration device during an experiment on June 19. The Wisconsin-based startup used a prototype converter to power lightbulbs, marking a demonstration of direct energy conversion technology. This process aims to bypass traditional steam turbine cycles to improve overall reactor efficiency.

Direct energy conversion offers a potential alternative to the thermal cycles used in current fission plants, which typically operate at lower efficiency levels. By recirculating electricity to heat plasma, developers aim to reduce the net energy consumption of fusion reactors. This approach could improve the economic viability of commercial fusion power by increasing total energy output.

For fusion startups, the hard part is over: Thanks to a groundbreaking experiment in 2022, we know that controlled nuclear fusion reactions can generate more power than they consume. But now companies need to prove their reactors can make enough electricity to be profitable.

One option is to simply turn up the temperature, generating more heat to produce more steam to spin a bigger turbine. Another is to harvest electricity directly from the fusion reactions themselves, an approach that promises to be more efficient.
