NASA confirmed the Space Reactor-1 Freedom mission will cost at least $2.1 billion. The agency plans to fund the project through fiscal 2029 by reallocating resources from existing exploration accounts. This initiative aims to demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion by launching a reactor-powered spacecraft to Mars in late 2028.

The project relies on collaboration with the Department of Energy to design and assemble the reactor. By repurposing hardware originally intended for the canceled Gateway lunar station, NASA intends to accelerate development timelines. This mission represents a shift toward nuclear-powered deep space exploration, though the exclusion of science payload costs raises concerns regarding potential impacts on broader agency budgets.
