I spent seven years at Fernald before I moved down to Oak Ridge a little over twenty years ago. I have been back a couple times when it was a wetlands reserve. I tried to place the location of some of the old buildings but without a bit of a reference point I had a hard time doing it.

The Fernald Preserve is hosting an open house in August 2026 to mark the twentieth anniversary of the site's remediation and transition to long-term stewardship. The facility continues to offer public educational programming, including historical discussions regarding the site's role in Cold War nuclear production and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Interested parties can contact the Department of Energy office for specific event schedules and registration requirements.

Fernald Preserve celebrates 20 years of the successful remediation of the site and subsequent long-term stewardship. Join us for an open house and special event programs from 2-4pm. Details to follow.

Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship, or MAPS, is a long-running study of breeding birds and their dispersal pattern across the country.
