Oak Ridge National Laboratory has licensed a suite of cryogenic pellet fueling technologies to Type One Energy. The agreement covers four inventions designed to produce and inject solid hydrogen pellets into fusion plasmas. This technology aims to improve fuel efficiency and core plasma performance in next-generation stellarator fusion devices.

Reliable fueling is a technical hurdle for continuous fusion power generation, particularly regarding the handling of tritium. Current methods like gas puffing lack the precision required for reactor-scale operations. By transitioning these laboratory-developed extrusion systems to the private sector, the collaboration seeks to address fuel containment and high-repetition injection rates necessary for commercial fusion viability.
