Curio, NuScale Power, and Framatome have signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate the recycling of used nuclear fuel. The partners will use Curio's proprietary NuCycle technology to assess pathways for recovering materials from spent fuel. This effort aims to support future fuel fabrication, supply chain development, and commercial deployment of advanced reactors.

This collaboration addresses the long-standing challenge of managing used fuel in the United States, where commercial reprocessing has been prohibited since 1977. By exploring methods to recover materials and reduce waste volumes, the companies seek to create a more integrated fuel cycle. This work aligns with recent Department of Energy initiatives aimed at developing commercially viable reprocessing technologies for the current light-water reactor fleet.

US advanced nuclear recycling technologies firm Curio has signed a memorandum of understanding with NuScale Power and Framatome to evaluate how recovered materials from used nuclear fuel can support future fuel and product streams. ;

Under the agreement, the partners will evaluate source-to-product and source-to-fuel pathways for materials recoverable through Curio's proprietary NuCycle technology, while identifying opportunities for future engineering coordination, fuel development, qualification, fabrication, and commercialisation. The collaboration will also seek to facilitate connections across the nuclear supply chain to more seamlessly bring next-generation fuel and product streams to market.
