Deep Isolation and Halliburton are collaborating on a demonstration project in Texas to test the use of directional oil-drilling technology for permanent nuclear waste disposal. The partners plan to drill deep, horizontal boreholes to store radioactive canisters two miles underground, aiming to provide a scalable alternative to traditional mined repositories.

The nuclear industry currently faces a backlog of over 95,000 metric tons of spent fuel stored at temporary sites across the United States. By adapting oilfield techniques to create retrievable storage, the project seeks to address long-standing regulatory and logistical hurdles that have stalled centralized waste management efforts like the Yucca Mountain repository.

QuoteDeep Isolation is betting on drilling wells to bury nuclear waste if federal regulations evolve.
