A YouGov survey commissioned by Deep Isolation indicates that 81 percent of Americans view permanent high-level radioactive waste disposal as a national priority. While 65 percent of respondents expressed support for deep borehole disposal after reviewing technical information, only 28 percent favored the continued long-term storage of used fuel at reactor sites.

The findings highlight a disconnect between public expectations and the current status of the US waste management program. With approximately 95,000 tonnes of used fuel currently held at reactor sites, the industry faces ongoing pressure to address the lack of a permanent repository. These results suggest that future policy progress may depend on transparent public engagement and the deployment of proven geological isolation technologies.
