Los Alamos Achieving Banner Year for Waste Shipments to Waste Isolation Pilot Plant; Hanford Tank-Side Pretreatment System Resumes Operations After 6-month Pause; and much more!

Los Alamos cleanup crews completed eighty-two transuranic waste shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant this fiscal year, marking a ninety-one percent increase over the previous year. The surge stems from retrieving and downsizing legacy radioactive materials at the New Mexico laboratory.

At the Hanford Site, the Tank-Side Cesium Removal System resumed operations following a six-month pause caused by storage capacity limits in receiving tanks. Meanwhile, the Idaho National Laboratory deployed a new condensate evaporator to reduce liquid waste processing costs.

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA) has completed a record number of transuranic (TRU) waste shipments under the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

In fiscal year (FY) 2026 to date, EM-LA and Newport News Nuclear BWXT-Los Alamos LLC (N3B), the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) legacy cleanup contractor, have finished 82 transuranic waste shipments to EM's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. This marks an 91% increase over 43 shipments in FY 2025.
