So this is my sit.  I'm a sophomore in college, arizona state's business school.  I'm joining the Navy next week(depping til april) with a SEAL challenge contract.  Today I took the asvab (92), and did pretty well compared to the average recruit according to all the recruiters.  So they were all trying to talk me into switching to Nuke, obviously I didnt because I have no clue what they do, beyond powering the carriers and subs.  However if for some reason I dont pass the physical on monday for my contract, it is defiantly something that interests me.  So my questions are as follows, please take into consideration that I've browsed for a few hours and really am still lost as to what you guys do.  All these 3 letter abbrevations and the shortage of websites that spell out job specifics like they do for communities such as the SEALs and Aviators. 

So I've taken the asvab and qualed, is there any other test I need to take to qual for the school?
If so what is on the test?
What do you do at the school, subjects etc..?
What are the different jobs within the community?  I've seen abbrev's like MM, ELT, EM....
What do the abbrev's RO SLO Eaaw(not sure if its it but I know its a 4 letter abbrev that starts with E)?
So your in the Navy for 6 years and decide to get out and work at a power plant,  what do you do there?
Do you need to get a degree in Nuclear physics or something to work at one?
What is the avg salary once out of the navy, with and without a degree?
And is it anything like being a part of Harrison Fords crew in K-19

Justin, I know we've disagreed in the past but I can't let you get away with this.  Crimson Tide???  Are you serious?  Everyone knows that movie didn't really portray the submarine force.  If you really want to know what submarine life is like, then you need to watch LCDR Dodge's command (USS Stingray) in Down Periscope.

Wow-I was going to say the same thing, but I was afraid I would offend the real sailors among you! The first time I saw that movie in the theater with my wife, she could not understand why I was laughing so hard. Watching the radioman (or was he an EM?) jumper the broken radio power supply with his bare toes and fingers was funny enough, but then putting on the NSTM-300 compliant insulated gloves to operate the power switch killed me. It reminded me of OI-62 (or-56).

Watching the crew deal with the annoying JO struck me as the exact same behavior I witnessed for years at prototype when cocky Ensigns, or worse-SWO LTJGs, would "order" a PO2 to give them a checkout. I wish I could have gotten some of those occurrences on DVD. I am sure Justin had that happen more than once. No way that would have happened on the 'Bama!

The only thing more realistic is tubedaze.

No translation loss here...that was my dry sense of humor coupled with tons of sarcasm right back at ya!    This is why I love working with nukes.  We are efficient with our words and there is usually a deep sense of sarcasm sewn into the fabric of the conversation. 


ljm, Justin and I were kidding you about submarine life and the movies.  Down periscope really isn't a true adaptation of submarine life and while there are some consistencies with Crimson Tide and boomer life, the CO doesn't bring his dog underway with him.  Sorry if we misled you.  However, on a very serious note, once you get to your first submarine here is one piece of advice for you.  If for some reason that the email server goes down, be the first guy to volunteer to retrieve the mail buoy.  This job is a bit dangerous but if you are up for a challenge, the crew will love you for risking your life just to get your shipmates mail.  Good luck!

You needn't worry. Everyone here is very nice and responsive to the right attitudes. You have that attitude that everyone will respond positively to. I think you probably notice that if you look around. When a kid comes here genuinely concerned and genuinely interested in helping himself out and finding answers, he gets what he is looking for. But sometimes, you get a kid that grew up on the couch in the front of the TV and video games that just wants everything spoon fed to him, like his parents probably did all his life. They are often rude and demanding about it too. Folks in the nuke world don't respond well to that attitude. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that in the nuke world, NOTHING is spoon fed to you. Folks in the nuke world have to work very hard to get where they are and a little tough love is needed along the way. Even though it seems we come down real hard on these kids, and we do, it is really to help start preparing them for the life path they are taking. It takes a totally different mindset than what they are bringing and undoing 18 years of programming can be difficult. Therefore, as blunt and hard as it may seem, it is a necessary animal to help them succeed. So, like I said, you needn't worry.

(the previous text stated that the enigne was "retarded" or worked in an odd manner, I, in no way, was referring to this site's search feature, i was trying to state what problems i have had with other search engines on other forums and I have yet to use the feature on this forum.)

Now, just because you can run real good don't mean anything besides that you'll be the one picked in bootcamp to run in the captain's cup and you won't be the skinny nerd-nuke that can't pass a PFA or PRT. That's nice if your physically fit but it's about being able to simply absorb information or figure out how something works (without hitting the "I believe button")

You could not be any more wrong. Being physically fit is a part of our JOB! If you are able to focus and perfom your military duties in ALL aspects, your time in charleston will be MUCH less stressful. I find it amazing how much less stress I had when I started to realize that the nuke program is more then a school. They dont care if you can turn valves, or push a button at the right time. They want people who are capable of doing their job at all times. Doing your job entails: putting in proper effort for school, staying physically fit (which is why you dont get promoted if you cant pass your PFA), having a sat haircut/uniform, and having the proper respect for your shipmates and those appointed over you.

Simply absorbing information is what gets people killed. They are the ones that feel they dont have to use a procedure. Understanding the information handed to you, and understanding what happens afterwards is much more important then understanding.

If you continue to feel this way, wait till prototype :-D You WILL be corrected. (which is why myself, among others that scored meagerly in power school, are ahead of the class in all shapes and forms)

Wow how refreshing, a baby nuke that realizes his job. It always baffled me the kids that were surprised that they had to get a hair cut and wear a sat uniform... almost as if they didn't believe those things about the military. Even worse, the ones that don't really think they have to go to sea. But those are the keys to staying under the military radar aren't they? Cutting your hair, keeping your uniform neat, and ending your sentence with the proper title is all it takes to stay out of the simple military bearing trouble.
