I use the Yahoo and Gmail with pop forwarding to Outlook.  I would recommend the Gmail.  I like the amount of space they give you and the pop forwarding for free.  Yahoo charges money for the same space and pop forwarding.

I recommend Gmail, it give a lot of advantages considering that you can use it in another programs of google, like blogger, google analytics.

And as a gold member, you can get a nukeworker.net email account, that is powered by gmail.  -- And like shane said, you can use outlook to check your gmail account.

I replaced MS office altogether with OpenOffice.org and like it lots..  Plus it is free.  So I also replaced Outlook with Thunderbird (Mozilla) and it is free also.
