Hello my name is Cory and i have just enlisted into the Navy Nuke program and i am soon to head out to basic. i have done about 2 years of college already and have my AA in general education but what i really want to know is what to expect in the coming months of "A" school, NPS, and Prototype school.

I would also like to know what i should study up on before i go into "A" school. In college i made it to Calc II and Physics I but i did not due so well in those classes due to lack of motivation at the time. I still have my Calc book and physics I, II book and just want to know what parts of those would be good to have memorized or extra practice with before i start school.

On-topic: The books you mentioned should be more than adequate. Not that ALL of that material is covered at enlisted NPS, but it will help focus and motivate you towards the goal. Or not.

This always drove me crazy. One of my roommates in power school would spend an hour or two a night studying and then spend about five or six hours skateboarding around the mall. I believe he graduated the second or third highest mechanic in my class. The guy who sat next to me was a hard core mando commando and I believe was honestly trying as hard as he could, but ended up going to sub school instead of prototype after graduation.

My reasons for asking were only because there is very little info on specific parts of what i will be studying in the soon to come months.

I am the type of person who refuses to be unprepared, the nuke coordinator seems to have no time for my questions and my recruiter has no experience in the field thus why i came here to were i expected ppl to have been there and done that.

As someone who entered the NNPP with a Physics degree, I will tell you that you would be wasting your time memorizing anything in any of those books that you have now. In fact, you'll essentially have to "unlearn" what you've learned. The NNPP was designed to bring someone in off the streets at 18 years old and has had barely anything over algebra. They have a prescribed way in which you WILL do the problems, and they will teach you that way from day one. Personally, my previous studies were a hindrance at first because I was always questioning what was being said, to my peril. I failed the very first basic math test because I refused to go along. That is the only test I ever failed in my nuclear power career, by the way. I learned my hard lesson, took my lumps, and never looked back.

So, my advice is RELAX. Enjoy your time and don't worry about memorizing or studying for the NNPP because..., you really can't. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE between now and your ship date, but have some fun. Go somewhere, do something (or someone ). Before you know it, you'll be knee deep in the program.

The reasons for all the 'Search!' demands are simple. It really has all been discussed here in depth (I know this and I don't pay that much attention to the Navy Section since I am a product of the Commercial Industry) and the most important thing you can do right now to prepare you for what you will need to be doing is learn to find things that are in front of you. In other words, take advantage of the assistance you get, but more importantly take the initiative to be the guy that others come to because you have already found the answers on your own.

There is truly a wealth of information in these pages, put here by people that have already walked the path you are starting on. No one is going to spoon feed you here... that would be a waste of time and a disservice to you. The information is there. If you have not found it yet, keep looking. If you still don't find it look harder. When you have exhausted your ability to find it for yourself, ask very specific questions and someone will point you in the right direction.

No one here wants you to fail. Providing you with information without making you work for it will only increase the chances of your failure. Trust me on this. And trust the others here -- they will not let you fail if you show that you are willing to work to succeed. If you don't start off with the ability and desire to do it for yourself, you have already failed.

Awesome thanks, that was some good advice i will try harder for what i need because i know I'm far from the first to do this. i just need to relax this is a big deal to me for this is all i have ever wanted to do, and its family tradition to join the Navy i am the first to qualify to be a nuc.

Congrats Cory. Same Here I Just enlisted about a month ago and leave in Sept.
I"ve done tons of research on what to study for and prepare, but honestly there really isn't much you can do to get ahead of the game. I would recommend:

1)Stay in school mode (take a class or just research nuclear news or read)
2)I found study information about all topics that will most likely be covered in A school/Power school. But please note that what they teach you and the way they teach you in the Navy will be very different from what you learn in the civilian world. But this is definitely a good start.
3) Learn the basic foundations of physics, thermodynamics, and/or electronics.

Its not like we (the navy) are making things up and changing the basic laws of physics and mechanics.

What we do is teach you a methodology of solving problems.  This methodology may be different then what you have been exposed to in the past.  We expect you to do things our way....its a rudimentary introduction to procedural compliance.

You seem to have come to a place where you are determined to be successful yet are disappointed that others do not embrace your new found dedication with supportive action on their part;

The coordinator and recruiter are guys on shore duty with day jobs. I would wager in this economy they have processed hundreds of enlistees without previous motivation issues and hundreds with motivation issues. You are not a special snowflake, you have previously failed to avail yourself of the privilege for self improvement in college. This, in and of itself, does not guarantee you will not dedicate yourself or not succeed in future endeavours. Yet, be assured there are other candidates for whom enhanced shepherding through the recruitment process has a higher probability of success. No one wants to expend too much effort on lower probability prospects.

Besides, you have indicated you are already Navy Nuclear Power Program designated so relax and be secure in the knowledge that the Navy will tell you and provide to you all and everything you will need to succeed. You just have to pick it up and do it.

Keep us posted as you progress when you can. Over the years we have begun to acquire a number of posters who have made the civilian to Navy and back to civilian life transitions.

Most are successful, one or two mixed, some seem to drop off the radar altogether,....

I'm always intrigued by the notion some folks have that the NNPP and it's pipeline were invented by a bunch of disgruntled E-6's and coffee clutching Master Chiefs who can no longer view their own gigline without use of a mirror,...

Navy brass is chock a block full of Masters and PhD's,...

Not to mention things like NNPP pipelines are peer reviewed by academicians,...

I believe the point is the pipeline is fairly unique, and that it has its own unique set of challenges that will be hard to replicate elsewhere.
