The Department of Energy provided $2.2 million to the New Mexico Environment Department Oversight Bureau for independent environmental monitoring. This three-year grant covers sampling of groundwater, soil, and radiation levels near the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The funding ensures external verification of safety protocols during ongoing transuranic waste operations through June 2029.
