The Indiana Office of Energy Development established a three-tier designation system to certify local jurisdictions as nuclear-ready based on infrastructure, workforce capacity, and regulatory engagement. This framework provides developers with standardized indicators of community readiness while guiding local governments through the requirements for hosting new nuclear projects. No communities have received a designation yet as the state begins accepting applications.

As states around the country continue to develop new methods of collaboration with local governments to facilitate and expedite new nuclear deployment, Indiana recently unveiled a plan of its own: the new Indiana Advanced Nuclear Ready Communities Program.

The Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED), which leads the program, describes it as a "first-of-its-kind state designation system" that formally recognizes communities that have taken measurable steps to prepare for new nuclear deployment.

The purpose: The OED frames this designation system as serving both the involved communities and the broader industry alike. For communities, the system serves as a guidepost pointing to milestones that should be achieved ahead of new project development. For industry, the various designations within the program serve as simple indicators of a community's infrastructure, regulatory engagement, workforce capacity, and overall local support.
