The Marine Minerals Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission have established a formal framework to coordinate the development of nuclear energy projects on the Outer Continental Shelf. This agreement clarifies jurisdictional roles and interagency communication protocols to assist developers in navigating regulatory requirements for offshore reactor deployment. The partnership aims to streamline the oversight process for novel energy production technologies in federal waters.

In support of the Trump administration's mandate to Unleash American Energy, the Marine Minerals Administration announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to strengthen cooperation between the agencies regarding potential nuclear projects on the Outer Continental Shelf.

The MOU will ensure nuclear energy projects on the Outer Continental Shelf are developed in a safe and environmentally responsible manner by fostering interagency communication and cooperation, clearly delineating areas of expertise and jurisdiction, and helping the regulated community understand applicable regulations. The agreement will also allow MMA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to responsibly respond to industry requests, supporting novel offshore energy production.
