Critical nuclear fusion reactor components get major US deal push

Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Rutherford Energy Ventures have launched the FULCRA initiative to develop shared testing facilities for commercial fusion hardware. The project will create specialized rigs to evaluate plasma-facing materials, fuel breeding blankets, and internal sensors under extreme reactor conditions. This effort aims to establish standardized testing infrastructure and safety protocols to accelerate the transition of fusion technology from research to commercial power generation.

The FULCRA initiative of ORNL offers cost-effective testing facilities to advance commercial fusion technology.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Rutherford Energy Ventures LP are joining forces to build a new network of fusion testing facilities. The initiative operates under an agreement called Fusion Upscaled Leveraged Consortia for Rapid Acceleration, or FULCRA. It addresses specific engineering targets set by the US Department of Energy.

Private fusion companies face a major hurdle before they can build working power plants. Their equipment must survive extreme conditions inside a reactor core. However, building facilities to test these parts is far too expensive for any single company or lab.
