The Department of Energy is preparing to receive a high burnup used nuclear fuel research cask at the Idaho National Laboratory in 2027. Personnel are currently refurbishing rail infrastructure at the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center to facilitate the transfer, which supports long-term fuel storage and transportation research.

This project enables data collection on high burnup fuel, which remains in reactors longer to increase energy output. By utilizing specialized facilities and experienced personnel, the Department of Energy aims to establish safe handling protocols for future fuel shipments. This effort aligns with the 1995 Idaho Settlement Agreement regarding nuclear waste management.
