Holtec's SMR-300 test facility taking shape at INL

Holtec International is constructing a one-third scale test facility at Idaho National Laboratory to evaluate the thermal hydraulic performance of its SMR-300 design. The project aims to collect data on steady state and transient conditions to support future power uprate licensing for the planned Pioneer 1 and 2 units in Michigan. System dedication for the test loops is scheduled for 2027.

Holtec International says the HI-TEST facility - a one-third scale representation - will probe the SMR-300 design margin and potentially support future power uprates. ;

Holtec says that fabrication of key test components and preparations for facility installation are under way.

The facility at Idaho National Laboratory, supported by the US Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, "will serve to probe the SMR-300 design margin under both steady state and transient conditions to provide a physical corroboration of the plant's generation capacity, resilience, and operability".
