Susquehanna 1 began a forced short unscheduled outage on September 29, 2026. The event ended the 1,247-MW General Electric BWR/4 unit's unscheduled outage-free streak at 317 days.

Operator TalenEnergy Susquehanna, which operates one other U.S. nuclear unit, logged one forced outage so far in 2026 compared to two in all of 2025. The plant has been in commercial operation since 1983. Across the broader fleet today, 94 units operate at an 88.9 capacity factor, with nine reactors in refueling and one in unscheduled outages.

This is the first unscheduled outage of 2026 for the unit, which had 2 unscheduled outages in all of 2025. Its most recent outage was a 43-day refueling outage that ended in May 2026.

Across the U.S. fleet of 94 commercial reactors, today's combined capacity factor is 88.9% (9 units currently refueling, 1 unit in an unscheduled outage), below the 92.8% baseline for this month over the past five years. At the same site, Susquehanna 2 is running at full power. While the unit is down, that takes about 998,000 homes' worth of generation off the grid.
