Susquehanna 1, Berwick, Pennsylvania.

Susquehanna 1 began a forced short unscheduled outage on September 29, 2026. The event ended the 1,247-MW General Electric BWR/4 unit's unscheduled outage-free streak at 317 days.

Operator TalenEnergy Susquehanna, which operates one other U.S. nuclear unit, logged one forced outage so far in 2026 compared to two in all of 2025. The plant has been in commercial operation since 1983. Across the broader fleet today, 94 units operate at an 88.9 capacity factor, with nine reactors in refueling and one in unscheduled outages.

BERWICK, PA. Susquehanna 1 dropped offline on Sep 29, 2026, beginning an unscheduled outage. The NRC has not yet issued an event notification for this trip; a follow-up reply will be posted here if one is filed.

This is the first unscheduled outage of 2026 for the unit, which had 2 unscheduled outages in all of 2025. Its most recent outage was a 43-day refueling outage that ended in May 2026.

Across the U.S. fleet of 94 commercial reactors, today's combined capacity factor is 88.9% (9 units currently refueling, 1 unit in an unscheduled outage), below the 92.8% baseline for this month over the past five years. At the same site, Susquehanna 2 is running at full power. While the unit is down, that takes about 998,000 homes' worth of generation off the grid.

Susquehanna 1 is a 1,247-MW General Electric BWR/4 operated by TalenEnergy Susquehanna (commercial operation since 1983). The utility operates 1 other U.S. nuclear unit. Its operating license runs through 2042 (renewed in 2009).

Susquehanna 1 restarted following an extended unscheduled outage that kept the unit at 0% power for 16 days. As of the NRC report on 2026-10-15, the unit is operating at 65% power and continues to ramp up. This event marks the 1st forced outage for the unit in 2026, compared to 2 forced outages recorded in all of 2025.

Susquehanna 1 has restarted after an unscheduled outage that kept it at 0% power for 16 days in the NRC's daily reports (Sep 29, 2026 to Oct 14, 2026). As of the NRC's Oct 15, 2026 report, Susquehanna 1 was at 65% power, still climbing back to full output. After its last 10 forced outages, the unit took a median of 5 days to climb from restart to full power.

The 16 days at 0% power cost roughly 479,000 MWh of generation, worth approximately $19 million at recent wholesale prices. Output lost during the climb back to full power will be added in a follow-up once the unit gets there.

Susquehanna 1 reached full power (100%) in the NRC's Oct 20, 2026 daily report, 5 days after its first reading above 0% on Oct 15, 2026. From the first 0% report on Sep 29, 2026 to full power took 21 days. That climb from restart to full power compares with a median of 5 days over the unit's last 10 forced outages.

Counting the days at 0% power and the climb back, the outage cost roughly 514,000 MWh of generation, worth approximately $21 million at recent wholesale prices, based on the NRC's daily power readings.
