Avalanche Energy announced plans to invest one billion dollars to build a fusion reactor manufacturing facility in the Tri-Cities region of Washington. The project will employ up to one thousand workers to develop and produce compact fusion devices for diverse power applications.

The company is currently retrofitting a research facility in Richland to test its prototypes before breaking ground on the production plant near the end of the decade. Fusion technology combines atoms to generate power without creating the radioactive waste associated with traditional fission reactors, attracting interest from defense and commercial sectors.

QuoteLandmark project would establish a world-class advanced manufacturing center, create hundreds of long-term jobs and position the Tri-Cities and state as a global hub for fusion technology.

Avalanche CEO Robin Langtry, left, and Karl Dye, president and CEO of Tri-City Development Council, shake hands after ceremonially signing letters committing them to work together to site and build Avalanche's first global manufacturing facility for its fusion reactors.

A year and a half ago, a Seattle-based nuclear startup got the keys to a Port of Benton facility it hoped would be its first test bed for its cutting-edge fusion reactors.
