MIT spinout Blue Energy plans to manufacture massive nuclear reactor modules inside commercial shipyards. The firm intends to shorten construction timelines and lower financial risks by initially operating hybrid energy facilities on natural gas before transitioning to nuclear power generation.

Traditional nuclear construction suffers from severe delays and cost overruns due to complex on-site assembly challenges. By prefabricating large blocks and securing early revenue through gas turbines, the company hopes to attract financing and deploy small modular reactors for a planned project in Texas.

QuoteMIT spinout Blue Energy wants to dramatically shorten the time it takes to build nuclear reactors. Founded by alumnus Jake Jurewicz, the firm prefabricates huge blocks of its nuclear plants at shipyards, where giant steel structures are already produced for the oil and gas industry.
