MIT spinout Blue Energy is utilizing shipyard prefabrication to manufacture large modular components for nuclear power plants. The firm recently submitted an initial construction application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a hybrid energy project scheduled in Texas.

Traditional nuclear construction often suffers from severe delays and financial overruns due to complex on-site assembly requirements. Blue Energy attempts to mitigate these economic hurdles by initially operating its facilities on natural gas before integrating small modular reactors. This strategy aims to generate early revenue and lower capital costs for utilities.

QuoteMIT spinout Blue Energy wants to dramatically shorten the time it takes to build nuclear reactors. Founded by alumnus Jake Jurewicz, the firm prefabricates huge blocks of its nuclear plants at shipyards, where giant steel structures are already produced for the oil and gas industry.
