There is no such thing as a good cheap place to stay at Vermont Yankee...I stayed at West Village Motel. They have small cabins and efficiencies for around $200+ per week. Not a real nice place but clean and private. The leaf peepers may have all the weekends already tied up for the fall.

TamiTrueheart

My most favorite place to work.

Phurst

I was there for 6 weeks in '79 and I stopped in Brattleboro for a few days in 2001. My how the town hasn't changed. I met a girl there in '79 that told me we could shut down the plant. When I asked her what we could use for power she told me we could burn wood. I like the place and working there was fun, a nice family type place. I think it is a crime they are trying to shut it down.
Today is the best day of my life! HSIITBS!

My guess is, that Ben & Jerry probably are sponsoring the anti-nuke movement.  They are notorious for supporting things that are detrimental to our country and our way of life.  Just for the record, I have been boycotting B&J for 3 years now.  There are lots of other good ice creams in the world.  : )

Thanks for the good infor on B&J, like I said, now we have even more reasons to eat our favorite treat elsewhere.  These people really make me sick.  Not getting any of my money!!!

Here's a link to much of the trouble at VY. It's called the School for International Training and it's in Brattleboro.

http://www.sit.edu/index.html

Here's some of the course work:
International Education
 Language and Culture
 NGOs and Civil Society
 Peace and Conflict Transformation
 Social Justice
 Socially Responsible Management
 Sustainable Development
 Teacher Preparation

This place will use VY as a proving ground for protests; die-ins; love-ins;etc. If Raytheon or Mcdonnell Douglas were in town then they'd be the target for being corporate greed and injustice.
Instead it's VY just trying to churn out megawattts for the farmers and granola crunchers. Not that I don't like granola.
This 'school' used to run monthly demonstrations at VY as regular as clockwork when Seabrook was being targeted, too.

Carolina Jethro

Super nice  people at VY... most of the people in area were pretty nice too. If I ever go on the road again this will be one of my first stops. If they just didn't talk so funny and if they would learn how to cook!  [smiley=wave.gif]

jdstanford

I worked the re-rack project at VY in the 80's.  I liked the plant.  I lived in Burlington from 1997 to 2001 and loved Lake Champlain.  If you work VY take a trip up to Burlington, great town.  On another note, Ben and Jerry no longer own Ben and Jerry's.  They sold out a couple of years ago to some conglomerate (the name was kept).  Ben and Jerry aren't even affiliated with the ice cream anymore because they didn't like some of the things the conglomerate wanted to do.

High_Rad_Drifter

Well, I'm still boycotting B&J's 'cause it got me spited.  I promise that I'll never eat it again!  By the way, I think that the folks at VY are really nice when this 'ol southern boy falls on the ice up there.  They hardly laugh at all.

HydroDave63

I am curious how the change in ownership has affected working conditions and hiring practices...does anyone have any specific knowledge?

Pet_Cow

Ben and Jerry's is not owned by B&J. They were bought out  by Unilever in August of 2000. By agreement Unilever must give money to the B&J foundation. The irony of this was at Seattle- Unilever was represented at the WTO meeting. Money from the B&J foundation was used to finance protesters of Unilever.

I give to the general B&J foundation via my long distance company-Working Assets which donates part of my bill to "chic liberal" causes. I also get a discount on leftist books such as Michael Moore's best seller "Stupid White Men" and they will send out a prewritten mailing to my Senators and Rep. on important legislation for a token fee.

;DJust thought I'd put in a plug while folks have the fall planned, and are looking at the spring outages. VY will be replacing several feedwater heaters, and the HP turbine this outage, in preparation for power upgrade. Tentatively scheduled for April, expected to last 30-35 days. :D

The ski season should be about over :), so housing should be available. Last outage was "foliage season" and some folks had a hard time with the hotels. :P

For those that have been to VY before, the "GO Cards" are no longer. :'( That program has ended, and there is not a replacement for contractors.

RP contract is still Numco as far as I know, but the home office handles everything. The local office is closing, and the lady there was hired by Security.

I think VY will be looking for 55+ techs ;D, with a lot of low dose work in the turbine bldg ;). Hope that enough folks come, it sure is better on everyone when there are enough people to go around. ;D ;D

Was there in '97, was a great place to work, the crew I was on was there for hydrolazing.Worked with some great guys, the plant people treat you well. the area is tight on places to stay, when the outage falls in the off season( non -snow,no leaf peepers) you can get good deals at the resorts. I ended up in Keene N.H., but the drive wasn't bad. it is a good place to visit.

justme

Just heard from Numanco that the pay has dropped for VY between 2.50 and 5.00 dollars.  This is also at all entergy plants.  You think pay would go up, not down.  But they will probably staff at the lower rate anyway, which will hurt us all.  Any comments?
It is what it is!

Carolina Jethro

The pay and incentives that VY use to have was one of the reasons I always went back. The people there were real nice but  the cost of living would keep me away if they dropped the pay rate. I hate to see Entergy ruin a great plant to work at. If that is the route they want to go... "Just say NO!"

justme

Any news on Entergy lowering its pay rate for all its plants.  I know VY is shutting down soon and it was told to techs that the pay was cut , and bonuses cut.  True????  Any info welcome.
It is what it is!

Carolina Jethro

Numanco recently called checking on my availability for going back to VY... and even though I am doing DOE now she did tell me that the pay and bonuses had been cut to the "standard" Entergy pay scale. She said they were having a hard time staffing and with the cost of living in that area I would imagine it won't get staffed unless Entergy wakes up and smells the coffee.I use to turn down work at my hometown plant to go there because I made more money there. Great plant, super people, but if you can't make the money it is just not worth it! Another case of " Just say NO!"

wondertech

I inquired about three Entergy sites( ANO, GG & VY) and got three different pay rates. The only thing they have in common is no bonus. It seems that Entergy South and Entergy North are not yet on the same page.

Nice area and good people at the plant. Though the Diem is a bit low for what you have to pay for lodging in the area.

Less Pay = Stay Away!

radman5030

Well there's still food stamps, you can't get enough time in to get unemployment.  Maybe get free govt. housing at the sites for the 12 day outages.

Just think if you can stack up 3 outages for the fall and 3 for the spring you can work 2 or maybe even 3 months a year.

What a great idea they have to cut pay, that will help supply the outages with the techs they need.

I applied to 2 of those jobs at least a month ago and I check my status at the website it says.  050-route......What exactly does that mean?

uncledoka

PauleyRL,

To the best of my knowledge (and we're all still trying to figure out the Entergy way) that "050-route" code indicates that one has made the "first cut" and the resume' has been forwarded down to New Orleans or Jackson HR.  This would indicate that your qualifications meet the requisition.  The next step is to determine whom to interview.

THEN I got a 'form" postcard to my home address saying thanks for resume , but no positions available, Dated for the day before I actually did the interveiw. Never did figure that one out. Never got a thanks for interveiw, but.....had to talk to others to find out if the positions ever got filled.

They also (like Pittsburgh) need a guide for furiners to learn the language. I can't tell you how many times I heard this exact sentence. " I prolly got suhnin I otta tell ya." And you don't ever say the t in Vermont. And words that end in a vowel all have an r added to the end and words that end in consonants often have the last consonant dropped. Just my left coast observations.

I keep seeing the power increase in the news.

What a PR nightmare; who would declare, "We are at 115% power and holding"? Do they not realize how this sounds to people that got their nuclear power information from Fonda (or else stayed at a Holiday Inn Express).

Why not declare what the new power limit is, then explain that they are at 83% of rated power, which was the old power limit.

what is the number of House RP techs at VY??
not incld ALARA & the like...just straight up house RP ops techs are there??
thx.!

retired nuke

Interesting question, because there are only shift qualified RP techs there. The folks that work in Instruments, RW, ALARA, etc maintain their quals for shift, and can be reassigned at management's discretion.

Currently 14 fully qualified  (just lost 1 to training)
8 newbies that are 99 44/100 % qualified - final sign-off in progress

Of the 14 - 3 in RW, 2 in Inst, 2 in ALARA, 4 (should be 6) on rotating shift, 1 on FIN team, 1 assigned as Maint Liason, 1 assigned to the checkpoint to do everything.....

Of the 8 - assignments are pending, a couple to shift, others spread out to get ready for our outage in May.

we should have some more openings by the end of the year.... :D

If anyone has a favorite hang out, place to shop, or local information for this area please post it here.

Great Chinese food on the hill on the left going out of town.  Super 8 Motel was ok. My wife liked the very, very small outlet mall in Brattleboro.  She loved the much Larger outlets that was north of there.  She spent too much of my $$$. LOL  Basketville is about 2 or 3 exits north on the interstate.  She wants to live up there year round.  Better buy another lottery ticket, hon!  LOL

Just wondering what everybody means by Vernon having a high cost of living. Am I way off when research told me about 97-99% national average for COL?   That sounds good to me. I have never lived near a power plant or industrialized area, but ~107% in Va Beach, and 143% in Northern Virginia when I grew up make 97% sound friggin awesome! Adding a lot of money over my Navy pay, and I will feel RICH!

Laundry Man

Congratulations!  I interviewed there in January and didn't get offered the position I applied for.  Yeah!  Since that time I interviewed and accepted my current position in Springfield MA and could not be happier.  VY did call me and offer a different position in the same department, all we need is to update you references etc. and we will hire you today.  Well since I no longer have e-plan duty, no on call weekends, no outages, etc. it was a no brainer saying thank you but no thanks.  The money would have been a little better at VY but a lot more free time at work and the wife will be closer to civilization.  We are about 15 miles to Amhearst, Springfield, and tons of stuff to do.  Enjoy VY, used to be the best place to work.

If you are going to work the outage, your recruiter should have this information.

bruin42

No they just gave me a report date.  I have left a message with my recruiter but have not yet had a reply, but she will call, she really good about that.

Sorry I didn't let everyone know, but my recruiter called and told me what I needed to know Tuesday afternoon.  The shut down date has changed (10/18), and the days have been lengthened a few days (28).  By the way, you must have a real good high speed internet service.

Noticed that they are offering a completion bonus at VY.  Add that to the pay rate and they are almost up to what they were paying 6 years ago.
I liked the area and the people at the plant but have missed a number of outages as a result of my practice of never going back to a plant to work for less money than the last time.

Back in the day..... VY was the place to work, for the money and the people.  The people are the only reason to go now, the guys that were there in the early nineties, ....'scuse me and the girl, sorry Terri.  They set the standard for RP pay, hate it that they dropped behind.

For any of you old timers at VY, I just this email.

Subject: Loss of a friend - Holly (Wentworth) DePaolis
Holly (Wentworth) DePaolis died on Thursday, September 25, following a long illness.  Holly was a contractor at VY starting as an RP Tech during the recirc outage in 1985 and continuing through the mid-1990's.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 3 from 2:30 – 5:30 at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles on Chickering Drive in Brattleboro.  A cold buffet will be served.  Holly's family has extended an invitation to the VY family to attend.
Additional details about Holly's life are available in the September 29 edition of the Brattleboro Reformer.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Holly's family.
Prayers to her family.

I am a former nuke electrician with 9 1/2 years in the navy plus 10 months as a field tech for an electrical manufacturing company installing and repairing switchgear and breakers. I am looking to apply for an Electrical Supervisor job with Entergy at Vermont Yankee and am looking for any advice that would be helpful to nail down the job. Also what is Entergy like to work for and what is Vermont Yankee like. Thanks in advance for any help and advice you give.

Xenon_Free

Entergy is a good company to work for AFAIK.  Vermont Yankee is a smaller plant that has recently uprated its power - and had a partial cooling tower collapse a year or two ago.  If offered a position as an electrical supervisor with so little industry experience, you should take it and learn all you can.  BTW, I wouldn't limit yourself to one plant right out of the Nav, that is a critical mistake a lot of ex-nukes make - yes you are in demand but your skills are not so unique that they'll never find another to hire instead of you.  Of course, that is my opinion.

VY just posted for an RPM - any takers.... :-X

We promise to be nice, at least until the shiny wears off..... ;)

Seriously, some new blood would be good for the place.... :)

Entergy just posted 8 operator positions - they'll show up on Nukeworker soon, but I thought I'd give it a bump. Go to the utility website, and search under careers.

How are our Vermont Yankee friends doing? The flooding from Irene is looking especially destructive in VT... saw some Reuters photos from downtown Brattleboro. Please keep us updated, our thoughts & prayers are with the plant & it's employees.

retired nuke

Plant did fine. Ct River is flowing at 100000 CFS +.
Brattleboro, and many small towns north of the plant got flooded by rain runoff - kinda like spring only worse...
A few employees have home damage. Some haven't been able to get to work. Western Mass is also hard hit in places. I-91 & Rt 2 in MA, Rt 9 in VT are closed in places. Management is reminding everyone to be careful, make sure priorities are right. If your family isn't safe, you shouldn't be at work...

Thanks for the good wishes... Vy spirit will get us through...

Entergy expects workforce reduction

http://theadvocate.com/news/6527262-123/entergy-estimates-quarterly-earnings

...In an earnings forecast that's less than half what it was a year ago, Entergy, the largest corporation based in Louisiana, said its second-quarter results will include expenses associated with its "human capital management strategic imperative."...

..."We have a number of companywide strategic imperatives underway examining how we meet both the challenges and opportunities of today's business realities," company spokesman Chanel Lagarde said in the brief statement.

"One specific initiative is focused on finding ways to increase efficiencies in all parts of our business.

"We do expect workforce reductions to be one result of this initiative."....

Unbelievable.  Those idiots in Montpelier are getting their way one way or another.  If power prices head north the way they have in California, hope the politicians pay with their jobs.  I enjoyed each and every day I workedat VY over the years.  A very sad day indeed.

The sad part is that just like at Songs, the same people who are wanting to shut down the Nuclear Power plants are the same ones screaming about global warming..or climate change whichever they are using these days.  Hey morons, you are shutting down the best electricity generation option that produces no greenhouse gasses.   They just don't get it.
I was always amazed in SoCal that they were so worried about Songs, yet they did not seem too concerned about the millions of cars that passed it everyday on I5 with 1 occupant in them.

Marlin

Sorry to see VY go it was my first commercial plant out of the Navy in 79'. It had a bad batch of fuel and I got the opportunity to operate the fuel sipping panel and draw samples for analysis, do Rad coverage on a real nasty refuel floor, operate the GeLi and other count room equipment, and ship radwaste. There is no way in the current regulatory environment that it would be possible for a green ex-navy nuke do that today when you are only in for a short outage. VY made my transition to commercial very easy there was a very good group of techs there.

I'm sad to hear another plant goes down! I had my first then Jr. HP job there in 1987 at 5$ and 30 a day diem. I enjoyed working there and the area was nice to even though I feel that maybe Brattleboro missed it's calling and should have been in the state of California.LOL. Good luck to those who work there and remember the good times

My biggest condolances for the workers at VY.  As I see the plants close, I can't help but think that any of us could be next.  Mismanagement, or a costly maintenance error, an unplanned reactivity excursion, a harsh political environment, an environmental hit...  Where I used to believe that we were all secure, and I'd have a job here until I retired, I now feel apprehension.  So, my heart goes out to you folks...  Best of luck in your futures!

Latest auction results show New England capacity market is not working, says municipal utility official

From the February 11, 2015 issue of Public Power Daily

By Jeannine Anderson
News Editor

Electricity consumers in New England are being hurt by the centralized capacity market being run by ISO New England, the head of Kennebunk Light and Power in Maine said Feb. 9.

The latest auction – Forward Capacity Auction 9, which began on Feb. 2 – will increase the region's costs by $1 billion, said Sharon Staz, general manager and treasurer of Kennebunk Light and Power, and former chair of the Northeast Public Power Association's Legislative Committee.

"Consumers we serve are alarmingly concerned about the increasing costs of the ISO New England capacity markets," Staz said in her Feb. 9 statement. "The region saw a 300 percent cost increase in last year's capacity auction [Forward Capacity Auction 8], and this week's auction price will increase regional costs by $1 billion more."

These capacity costs "translate to real dollars on our customers' utility bills, which are already 48 percent higher in New England than any other part of the country," Staz explained.

"To put this in context: with capacity costs at $4 billion, New England ratepayers are paying the equivalent of running four Nuclear Regulatory Commissions," she said. "Meanwhile, the market has little to show for these cost increases, and some areas of the region won't even meet needed demand."

"Some may say that this market is working, but we do not believe it is working for consumers," Staz concluded.

On Jan. 29, more than a dozen  members of Congress from New England wrote to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), asking it to re-examine the results of ISO New England's Forward Capacity Auction 8, which took place a year ago.

"We are writing to reiterate our concerns regarding electricity prices in the New England region," said the lawmakers. "The continued increase of rates across the New England region is alarming."

"Further, with Forward Capacity Auction 9 scheduled to take place on Feb. 2, 2015, we ask that the Commission closely monitor the upcoming auction and consider the impact of rate prices on consumers in deciding whether to certify the results later this year," they added.
