Lightbridge Corporation has secured access to the Advanced Test Reactor loop facility at Idaho National Laboratory to conduct irradiation testing on its proprietary fuel rodlets. This five-year project involves testing uranium-zirconium alloy fuel in both cylindrical and multi-lobe geometries under controlled conditions that replicate the environment of a commercial light-water reactor.

This testing phase is a requirement for fuel qualification and provides the empirical data necessary for regulatory review and utility adoption. By subjecting fuel samples to prototypic coolant chemistry, temperature, and pressure, the company aims to validate its performance models and move toward commercial deployment. Unlike static in-core positions, an ATR loop irradiates fuel within a self-contained and independently controlled environment of its own — the coolant chemistry, temperature, pressure, and flow environment a fuel rod would experience in a commercial light-water reactor.
