TerraPower, Bechtel part ways on Natrium project

TerraPower and Bechtel ended their partnership on the Natrium reactor project after failing to agree on terms for the next phase. The split prompted Bechtel to file a WARN notice indicating potential layoffs for approximately 200 workers in Virginia. TerraPower stated that the transition will not alter the 2030 construction completion schedule for the Wyoming facility, and the engineering contract will be rebid.

Engineering, construction, and project management firm Bechtel will no longer be involved with TerraPower's Natrium power plant project in Kemmerer, Wyo., after the two companies were unable to reach an agreement on the next phase of the project.

A TerraPower spokesperson said this won't impact the Kemmerer-1 project timeline, which currently calls for construction completion in 2030, and commercial operation by 2031.

"Construction in Kemmerer will maintain its current schedule with the exemplary subcontractor teams and EPC [engineering, procurement, and construction] support services from commercial-grade firms that have been working on-site," TerraPower said.
