The Bio-Dentrification Tower and Plants 2 and 3 After Demolition. Excavation Crews are Now Removing the Below-Grade Portions of the Structures.
Plants 2 and 3, the Ore Refinery Plants, were used to convert feed materials and recycled scrap to high purity uranium trioxide (UO3). Three processes were used during the conversion: digestion, where uranium was converted to soluble uranyl nitrate; extraction, where uranyl nitrate was extracted by a solvent mixture; and denitration, where high purity uranyl nitrate was converted to UO3. The D&D of the plants consists of surface decontamination, building and equipment dismantlement, size reduction of building material and the loading of demolition debris into rolloff boxes for transfer to the On-Site Disposal Facility.
